Setting up a Stream Deck for hypnosis sessions — in 15 minutes

While a client lies deeply in trance, you don't want to reach for the keyboard, make a mouse movement, or let your eyes wander to the screen. Each of these breaks the relational geometry. Elgato Stream Deck solves exactly that: a hardware pad with illuminated buttons you press without looking — phase changes, sound anchors, soft-stop, all by finger touch. This article shows which model suits the hypnosis practice, how to set it up — including the steps that come before Hypnotika — and what the optimal button layout looks like. Which Stream Deck model?

Elgato currently offers three variants relevant for the hypnosis practice:

• Stream Deck Mini (6 buttons, ~€90) — enough for solo practice with just 4 phases + 2 extras (e.g. soft-stop, one sound anchor). Small, easily hidden.
• Stream Deck (Standard, 15 buttons, ~€150) — the right choice for most practices. Room for 4 phases + 3 sound anchors + soft-stop + 7 more slots for special functions.
• Stream Deck XL (32 buttons, ~€250) — overkill for solo practices, useful for multi-workflow setups (hypnosis + yoga nidra + HypnoBirthing in the same practice, each method with its own button section).

Recommendation for 80% of practices: Stream Deck Standard, 15 buttons. Enough room, not overloaded, good price-performance.

Hypnotika + Stream Deck — out of the box

Hypnotika TranceDeck doesn't use a Stream Deck plugin but the more elegant route: global system hotkeys. You assign Stream Deck buttons to keyboard combinations like Ctrl+Alt+F1, Hypnotika responds even when the window isn't in focus. Advantage: Stream Deck works with ANY tool, not just Hypnotika.

Setup — step by step (about 15 minutes)

First things first: a Stream Deck is not a device you plug in and use. It needs its own setup with the computer first — entirely separate from Hypnotika. Only after that does the link to the hypnosis software come in. Steps 1 to 3 you do once and never again.

1. Download and install the Stream Deck App: free from elgato.com/downloads, for Windows and Mac. Best done before plugging in — then the computer recognises the device correctly the moment you connect it.
2. Connect the device: USB cable straight into the computer, no hub (see box above). The keys light up and the Stream Deck App shows the device.
3. First run of the app: it creates an empty profile automatically. Nothing to do with Hypnotika yet — at this point it is only about the device and the software knowing each other. If the app does not show the Stream Deck: try a different USB port, and restart the computer if needed.
4. Open Hypnotika: Settings → Stream Deck / Hotkeys → enable "Global hotkeys". The global combinations are listed there: Ctrl+Alt+F1 (Intro), F2 (swap track), F3 (Climax), F4 (Outro), F5 (Soft-Stop), F6 (cancel queue). On Linux it is Ctrl+Alt+1 to 6 — there the F-keys would switch to a text console.
   
   Two things worth knowing: there is no global combination for the middle phase — you reach it through the plugin or in the app itself. And the sound anchors sit on Q W E R T Z (anchors 1 to 6; on a QWERTY keyboard Y also triggers anchor 6) — but those six only fire while the Hypnotika window is in front. On a Stream Deck key they therefore only work when Hypnotika has focus. To trigger anchors regardless, use the plugin.
5. Open Stream Deck App: for each button → action "Hotkey" → enter keyboard combination.
6. Drop the icons on: from our free icon pack (see below), drag the matching image onto each key. Elgato recommends JPEG at 144 × 144 pixels — which is exactly what sits in the /jpg folder.
7. Test: open Hypnotika, focus a different window, press a Stream Deck button — Hypnotika responds.

A Stream Deck with unlabelled keys helps nobody. Elgato's own guide says: „Configure your actions and personalise the keys with your own icons. For best results use JPEG at 144 × 144 pixels." — So we built exactly that, to save everyone the work.

The labels are short on purpose (INTRO, CLIMAX, OUTRO …) — the keys are tiny, and short words stay readable from a metre away. Want different wording? The SVG sources are in the pack and the text can be changed in any editor.

Price-performance — for whom is it worth it?

Worth it if you:

• Run at least 5 sessions per week with Hypnotika
• Share screens in online sessions — mouse movements become visible
• Offer multiple methods in parallel (hypnosis + yoga nidra + HypnoBirthing) — Stream Deck XL saves mental switching

Client effect

Clients don't consciously notice the difference — but subconsciously they very much do. If you don't reach for the mouse every 5 minutes, the relational geometry stays more compact. Trance depth benefits.

Conclusion — small hardware, big effect

Stream Deck isn't a gimmick for streaming nerds but a professional tool that concretely improves trance quality in hypnosis practice. €150 one-time, 15 minutes to set up, then years of use. With more than 5 sessions per week the purchase amortises in under two months.
