Solfeggio frequencies: myth vs. science — what's actually real?

"528 Hz heals DNA", "396 Hz releases guilt", "852 Hz opens the third eye" — Solfeggio frequencies are ubiquitous in wellness and esoteric markets. YouTube tracks with millions of views promise specific healing effects. But what does science actually say? And what should you know as a hypnosis coach before using them in sessions or producing takeaway audios with them?

What Solfeggio frequencies are

Solfeggio historically refers to a medieval syllable sequence (ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la), developed by Guido of Arezzo in the 11th century for choral notation. Today's popular "Solfeggio frequencies" as 6 or 9 specific Hz values are a more modern construct — popularised in the 1970s by Dr. Joseph Puleo, later by esoteric authors like Leonard Horowitz.

The 9 "classical" Solfeggio frequencies

Evidence — very thin

Most popular "studies" on Solfeggio frequencies are not peer-reviewed, methodologically weak (small samples, no control groups, self-reports) or published by commercially interested actors. A serious meta-analysis is missing. What's scientifically recognised: resonance effects of sine tones on the nervous system exist generally, but specific healing effects of individual Hz values are not proven.

What science does confirm

Quiet music with clear pitches is relaxing — regardless of the specific frequency. Someone who hears 528 Hz and relaxes would have relaxed with 525 or 531 Hz. The relaxation effect is real; the attribution "528 Hz heals DNA" is not.

How to use responsibly

Solfeggio tracks are often beautiful sonically — as atmospheric element in sessions or self-hypnosis audios completely fine. What's problematic:

Recommendation: usable as atmosphere, not as healing promise

If you like Solfeggio tracks (sonically), use them as background. When clients ask: answer honestly — "I find the sound pleasant, but specific healing effects aren't scientifically proven." That strengthens your credibility long-term more than unproven sales claims.

Import Solfeggio tracks — as atmosphere
